High Performance EVD Motor/Controller IP67 Drive Sub-Systems (<- click for .pdf )

EVDrive uses these high performance motor/controller-inverter sub-systems in it’s own complete EVDrive-Train systems it builds for it’s customers.  Seriously consider your purchase from powertrain systems engineers like EVDrive, who actually top-down design these drivetrains and use these components in their projects, not just as a parts reseller with little real world experience with these world-class parts.  We decided to now open up sales of these motor and matched controller packages beyond our OEM customers and to now include end-users.  We will still continue to sell complete EVDrive-Trains to both OEMs and select end-users with special projects.  With continued sales of the EVDrive EVDrive-Train high performance complete drivetrains, which use these drive sub-systems (motor/controller-inverters), after our product line introduction and launch at SEMA 2011 in Las Vegas (<-INTERVIEW/MOTOR PACKAGES OVERVIEW VIDEO LINK), a sample of our more popular motor/controller-inverters drive sub-system configurations which we use in our own projects for our OEM customers, are now available with relatively short delivery times of 6-8 weeks.  (we also offer unique axial flux motors from PHI, Yasa, AVID-EVO and GoldenMotor, as well as radial flux motors and packages from UQM and Parker GVM and induction packages from HPEVS, all of these by request only)

Most of these features apply to all systems listed below, with exceptions as noted below.

  • Both single-core motors and controller are included in these systems and are both liquid-cooled and are waterproof.  The dual core motors are oil cooled with OPTIONAL water/oil exchanger which mounts on top near rear of motor.  All Rcr motors are part of the AMR series and have an industry unique high performance internal oil pump standard.
  • All systems support regenerative braking (a.k.a. “regen”) and many other advanced features required for OEM, hostile environment and high performance applications.
  • EVDrive offers OPTIONAL master controllers (VCU – Vehicle Control Units) that communicate via CANbus to coordinate functions of multiple slave controller/motor sub-systems (e.g. 4 motor AWD motor per wheel systems).
  • The packages designated with Rcr and dRcr, part of our AMR series of motors, shown below, use the industry leading/proven Remy IPM HVH 250 Motor cores/cartridges (we only use cores/cartridges shown in top picture on left at this link – we also use and offer the larger 410 series as well – inquire if interested), which have been in high volume production since 2003 in a Six Sigma quality control production facility.  The Remy cores have been proven durable with up to 850,000 miles driven by over 45,000 motors in both on and off road vehicles today.  They are used by more OEMs worldwide than any other PM motor and have more EV miles on the road around the world than any other motors/cores today.  In racing, for example, in 2013, using the same Remy IPM HVH250 cores that EVDrive uses, Lightning Motorcycles broke a milestone record with the fastest motorcycle gas or electric up to the top of the world famous Pike’s Peak Hillclimb.  The EVDrive AMR series proprietary enclosures with their unique oil cooling are NOT available from Remy – they are proprietary designs, CNC manufactured from billet aluminum and recognized as one of the best in the industry due to their highly efficient packaging/cooling, light weight and least coolant imposed drag on the rotor allowing the most power to be delivered from Remy cartridges pound for pound.  (see below)
    • Rcr cartridges or cores are supplied in a canister (as a “steel can”) and they can also be supplied with the canister installed in Remy’s own Aluminum housing (see other Remy re-sellers).  These housed motors (from Remy) are a bit challenged for high-performance applications with respect to their cooling oil flow, critically in their oil scavenge functions  – hence the creation of the EVDrive AMR series motors, now proven by many race teams around the world and sports car OEMs.
    • EVDrive AMR series motors were specifically designed to overcome these issues in standard Rcr motors, especially required for high-performance applications.
      1) Unlike standard Rcr motors, our motors have a built-in oil pump which turns when the motor turns thus we control the oil flow at all times hence the motor will be kept properly cooled at all times (provided a cooling loop is attached and operating, of course).
      2) We modify the Rcr canister itself to provide improved oil scavenge – our tests verified oil levels are optimal in a running motor – hence the oil fill point/plug on the rear.
      3) In addition, we added a high capacity oil sump to ensure optimal oil flow with no cavitation in high acceleration maneuvers in all vehicle directions.  For this reason, the motor must be mounted with sump parallel to ground for its primary operating position – of course in motorcycle and other applications, an occasional off-axis operation is acceptable and the sump and pick up design in our motors have taken these operating scenarios into account.
    • For Rcr and dRcr motors, our AMR series motor enclosure design exclusively includes an internal oil pump which NOW works in both rotation directions a.k.a. “bi-direction option now standard on Rcr motors” – thus critically cooling motor core in both rotation directions.  Non Rcr and dRcr (EVD70LV listed, 35, 105, 140) motors do not have this exclusive feature nor the oil sump at this time. 
    • The single Rcr core motors come standard with BMW 3-series flywheel flange shaft interface and our dual Rcr core motors come standard with male spline shaft interface (24/48 DP 45 deg PA 32 Teeth 35.58mm Major dia 33.25mm Minor dia.)   Both shaft interfaces are shown in pictures below.  If you require a different shaft interface, please notify at time of order.
  • Most systems listed include the fully featured RMS controller/inverters are the most power dense and efficient in the world today – with almost 10 man-years invested in the software and packaging and used by more electric superbike and auto (hybrid) race teams than any other controller.  Peak current is defined as a maximum of 30 seconds.  Motor continuous current is limited by the size of the conductor.  Maximum conductor size on largest unit is rated in a 32mm cable gland is 3/0 AWG or 95mm2
  • All motor units can handle/deliver additional power with upgraded EVD controllers
  • Voltage/HP/Torque/RPM curves available upon request – some general Remy cartridge information available here for 90mm long series “S” wound core and here for 115 long core and here for “P” parallel wound 115 long core (Note: these curves from Remy are under optimal conditions and do not consider typical losses – data below for our systems is real-world wherever possible).
  • Options available for these drive systems to make installation easier – e.g. High Voltage/Low Voltage Cable sets from inverter/controller to motor in 1m increments – specify length, input cable harnesses for inverter/controller to i/o, input connectors to inverter/controller – make your own cables, soft-start-contactor parts and/or assembled unit in an enclosure, test control paddles for inverter/controller, etc.  Other EVDrive-Train modules listed here are priced per specific application.
  • Gearbox options – Standard 2 gear single stage (off-axis) liquid-cooled integrated gearboxes available for EVD-Remy core motors in 2 ratios: 2:1 -and 3.33:1.  Custom boxes both single and 2-3 speed and motor shaft/flange interfaces also available priced based on application specs – NRE may be required based on quantity ordered.
