9. Power Steering pumpSince the BMW had a pump driven off the engine for this, an alternative must be used. This Toyota MR2 power steering pump is a likely candidate:
All other components from the original power steering system will be used.
Aug 2008 update: I purchased this late model MR2 power steering pump from a search on the internet. The closest salvage yard with one on hand was too far to drive so they shipped it to me. When it arrived I thought a mistake had been made because it didn't look like the photo above.
I confirmed it is indeed a late model spyder MR2 pump, so I am not sure what model the upper photo comes from. When I tested the fit in the planned location, to my delight it fit like it was made for it. Luck happens..
The plumbing of the high pressure output aligns directly with an opening just below the chassis structure where it has a short and straight path to the steering rack hydraulic input. The low pressure return to the fluid reservoir, pointing to the left in this photo, can be pointed any direction which should ensure a good route path. This inner fender panel completely encloses the pump.
It's visibility and access to the filler cap makes for a great location. This corner is accessible when the battery pack and the contactor box are installed.
The return fluid from the steering rack passes in and out of the radiator (red stripes around each) for cooling before being returned to the white plastic reservoir. I will take advantage of this nicely located feature after a little bending to point them in their optimal directions.
Next step: fab brackets to mount the pump, then make customize length hydraulic hoses.
